Weagree AI contract review playbook - Word add-in

AI-contract review playbooks

AI contract review counterparty contracts against your negotiation AI playbooks.

AI contract playbooks identify 🔴, 🟠, 🟡 and 🟢-flag clauses, proposes a markup in track changes directly in Word, and maintain your team’s cadence without switching applications.

The uphill climb of manual contract review

Third-party contracts don’t usually arrive in the form you need. Each AI contract review requires the same climb:

  • Identify problematic clauses (🔴, 🟠, 🟡 and 🟢)
  • Identify missing clauses (red flags)
  • Check corporate policy
  • Determine the appropriate fallback position
  • Precision/surgical redlining
  • Explain changes in comments

Your team spends hours navigating through third-party contracts whilst internal stakeholders wait for legal clearance. By the time you’ve crafted your feedback, an internal summary and cover e-mail to the counterparty, you’ve lost deal momentum.

  • See risk levels and fallback positions for each clause

How AI contract playbooks work

AI contract playbooks are like the Paris-Roubaix cycling classic but without cobblestones. Everything is geared to keep deal momentum:

Weagree AI-contract review playbook 01a configure negotiations

1. Set your playbook gear ratios

Configure your contracting policies once in an AI playbook. Define your ideal position, acceptable compromises and dealbreakers for each clause type. The structure is familiar – similar to traditional non-AI playbooks – but formatted for automated AI-contract review.

Each of your AI playbook includes:

  • Your contracting policy with multiple fallback-clause levels (in your contract languages)
  • Risk ratings (acceptable, requires approval, unacceptable, dealbreaker)
  • Guidance on when to apply to each fallback position
  • Pre-drafted comments explaining your position
  • Clause dependencies (accepting X requires modifying Y)

2. Get insight in all contractual risks

Open any counterparty-drafted contract in Word and launch Weagree’s add-in from your sidebar. Select the relevant playbook and click ‘Run playbook’. Your contract analysis completes in seconds. Your Weagree AI Assistant highlights every clause requiring attention, colour-coded by risk:

  • Green 🟢: acceptable (per your corporate contracting policy)
  • Yellow 🟡: acceptable (but not the preferred option)
  • Orange 🟠: unacceptable (requires approval)
  • Red 🔴: dealbreaker
  • Red triangle ▼: missing clause

3. Close-reading of every clause

Each AI-flagged clause shows:

  • Risk assessment (🔴, 🟠, 🟡 or 🟢) with reasoning
  • Your contracting policy and applicable fallbacks
  • Pre-drafted redlines ready to apply
  • Citations to your playbook rules
  • Highlighting the clause in the reviewed contract

Navigate easily by jumping directly to any AI-identified clause clicking ‘Go to’ clause. The clause highlights in your Word document.

4. Precision/surgical redlining

For each non-conforming clause identified during AI-contract review, choose how to respond:

  • Replace with track changes: apply your fallback language as tracked changes
  • Replace with track changes plus comment: include an explanation for the counterparty
  • Add Word ‘comment’ only: flag the issue without proposing wording
  • Optimise markup: surgical redlining minimises Word-level differences whilst achieving the same legal effect

Before applying the AI playbook wording, you can optimise the markup to reduce redlines, edit the AI-optimised text, or mark the clause as ‘not applicable’ as the transaction context may justify.

5. Let AI draft your clauses

Whether AI-reviewing a third-party drafted contract or drafting a contract yourself, let AI write any additional clauses you need:

AI drafts your contract clause, and you can of course tailor it to your liking. The Weagree AI Word add-in saves you brainstorming time – AI prevents that you overlooked something.

6. AI Chat with all your documents

For each non-conforming clause, select how to proceed:

  • Replace with track changes: apply your fallback language as tracked changes
  • Replace with track changes plus comment: include an explanation for the counterparty
  • Add comment only: flag the issue without proposing specific language
  • Optimise markup: minimise Word-level differences whilst achieving the same legal effect

Before applying, you can edit the proposed text, optimise the markup to reduce redlines, or mark the clause as not applicable if negotiation isn’t required here.

7. Summarise and document your route

Once you’ve completed your review, generate a summary for internal stakeholders or as cover-email to your counterparty:

  • Overall document risk assessment
  • Key issues flagged and positions taken
  • Clauses marked as dealbreakers (🔴, 🟠)
  • Cross-reference validation (identifying any broken cross-references)

AI creates the summary as Word, PDF or as an e-mail.

8. Prompt library

You have your prompt library with frequently used AI-actions one click away:

  • Check definitions: check the contract for any unused definitions or undefined terms
  • Check cross-references: check the document for any broken cross-references
  • List red flags: your playbook will identify it, but sometimes matters are outside the playbook boundaries
  • Draft a clause: prompt it yourself in the chat or use this step-up for best results
  • Summarise: a summary of any document or text (outside playbook scope)
  • Translate text (with acompanying guidance)
  • Chat. Just ask your document anything

Critical success factors for adopting AI playbooks

This is still not everything Weagree’s AI contract playbook plugin does to accelerate your work…

Additional gears for everyday contract work

Beyond AI playbook reviews, the Word add-in provides instant AI assistance:

  • Summarise documents or clauses. Highlight any section (or the full document) and request a summary. Useful for:
    • Getting up to speed on lengthy clauses or large agreements
    • Extracting key commercial terms
    • Preparing briefing notes
  • Translate your contract in layman’s terms or any language. Translate entire documents or selected passages into any language, maintaining Word’s structure and formatting.
  • Ask questions about your contract. The built-in chat panel understands your document. Chat with your contract:
    • What are the payment terms?
    • Does this contract include limitations of liability?
    • Draft an IT-security clause covering DORA, NIS2 and the AI Act

Authorised users can finetune the playbook-proposed clause text and an ‘Apply’ button will insert it directly in the document, with or without track changes, with or without comment.

Built for the peloton, not solo riders

AI contract playbooks work best when your entire team operates at the same cadence. AI playbooks can be shared across the legal team or specific user groups, BUs or across departments, ensuring consistent application of your negotiation standards regardless of who’s reviewing.

Configure playbooks for different scenarios:

  • Counterparty strength (strong vs. standard vs. weak)
  • Contract values and risk thresholds
  • Jurisdictions and governing law
  • Approval levels required for deviations

Weagree’s playbook solution suggests which fallback position to start with based on deal context, rather than always defaulting to your most favourable position.

From Word add-in to complete CLM-contract lifecycle

The AI playbook functionality is fully integrated in Weagree’s broader contract automation and CLM platform. As your requirements develop, the platform extends to:

  • Clause library: searchable repository of approved clauses
  • Approval workflows: route exceptions to appropriate stakeholders
  • Contract repository: store and track agreements with full metadata
  • Obligation management: extract and monitor key dates
  • Analytics: visibility into contract risks and negotiation patterns

Start with playbook reviews in Word, then expand your contracting maturity level as you go.

Frequently asked questions

How long does playbook setup take?

Review of a basic AI playbook created using AI, takes under an hour – define your key clauses and preferred positions. More comprehensive playbooks with multiple fallback levels, comments and explanatory notes might take a day. Most teams start with one high-volume contract type and expand from there.

Does it work with contracts in multiple languages?

Yes. Weagree’s AI playbooks support AI contract review in all languages that Microsoft supports (only limited by what your AI model covers. Weagree’s AI playbooks can include localised versions of your standard language.

Desktop and web versions of Word?

The add-in works in Word for Windows, Word for Mac, and Word for the web. Settings sync across all platforms. [Note: we are working on registration with Microsoft Apps (coming soon).]

What if the AI flags something incorrectly?

You are in control. Mark incorrect flags as ‘not applicable‘ or ‘ignore‘. The reasoning is always visible – you can see why the AI made each suggestion. And after all, the user can edit the proposed wording and will always decide what to ‘apply‘ in marking up the reviewed contract.

Can the whole team use the same playbooks?

Yes. AI contracting playbooks can be shared across your legal team or specific user groups, BU’s or other organisational units, ensuring everyone maintains the same pace and applies consistent standards.

How is this different from OpenAI, ChatGPT or general AI tools?

This is a lawyers-for-lawyers, purpose-built for AI contract review with structured playbooks, fallback positions, risk ratings and track changes integration. General AI tools require extensive prompting and produce inconsistent results because they weren’t designed for contract work.
