There are various possible causes for the automated import of Word documents not working as expected. Depending on the exact nature of the problem, try the following.
1. The import pop-up does not appear
You have just created a new template, but the pop-up Import template based on a Word document does not appear upon arrival in the Template Creation Tool.
You may have forgotten to switch on Automated import in the template creation pop-up. Delete the template and create it again. Enable Automated import before clicking Save.

2. The imported document does not load into the import pop-up
You have just created a new template and selected a Word document to be imported, but the pop-up Import template based on a Word document only shows the Word file field.
The likeliest causes are:
- You uploaded the Word document through the Add file field in the template creation pop-up. In that case, it will not be used for the import. The Add document field is intended for explanatory or supplementary documents. Download icons for these documents will appear next to templates for the benefit of end users.
First switch on Automated import, then click Save to proceed to the Template Creation Tool. When the Import template based on a Word document pop-up appears, drag-and-drop the document to the Word file field or click the field to browse for the file. Later, you can delete the copy you uploaded previously via Add document, by editing the general template properties on Administrator > Contract creation > (Contract) templates. Click on the minus button next to the document icon, confirm that you want to delete the file and finally click Save.

- The document is corrupted in some way.
Try opening it in Word and saving it as a new .docx file, or copy-and-paste its contents into a new Word document. Then import the new document.
3. The document cannot be uploaded
If you click the Word file field and browse for the file you cannot find it in the folder where it should be, or uploading it produces an error.
The likeliest causes are:
- The document has an incorrect file extension. It must be a .docx document. Other file types, such as .doc (Word 97-2003) or .odt (OpenDocument Text), cannot be uploaded and will not be visible in the file browser window.
- The document is corrupted in some way.
In either case, open the document in Word and save it as a new .docx file, or copy-and-paste its contents into a new Word document. Then import the new document.
4. The imported document is not displayed correctly in the import pop-up
The imported document does load into the pop-up Import template based on a Word document, but it is incomplete or certain parts look different from how they appear in Word.
The likeliest causes are:
- The document contains elements that are ignored by the import (e.g. headers, footers, or a table of contents).
Generally, this will not be a problem as these parts can (and should) be automatically generated by the Weagree Wizard and it is possible to customise them. If that is insufficient, you may attempt to manually recreate the missing elements within the template.
- The document contains data that the import cannot fully convert or which is not always visible in Word, but is not completely ignored by the import.
In case of entirely unwanted paragraphs, these can be safely deleted during import by clicking the minus button directly above the paragraph’s text. Parts of any paragraph that are unwanted or incorrect will have to be manually edited after completing the import. This also applies to any table that does not look as it should.
- The document is corrupted in some way.
If only some parts are not displaying correctly in the import pop-up, either delete them for now and manually insert them after import, or leave them and edit them after import. If most or all of the document is displaying incorrectly, try opening it in Word and saving it as a new .docx file, or copy-and-paste its contents into a new Word document. Then import the new document.
5. Completing the import failed
You were able to correctly upload the document and configure it for import, but after clicking Import to finish the process the template is still empty.
This may be caused by an error in the template structure you configured. Be mindful of the following:
- There must always be a building block (the icon left of the ‘level 2’ clause icon) at the top of the template and each schedule or annex.
- There may not be any gaps in the structure (e.g. a building block paragraph can be followed by a level 2 paragraph, but not a level 3 paragraph).
If an import has failed completely, you will have to create the template anew and retry importing.
